Nirbhaya Is Not The Name Of The Victim

January 21, 2013

The ending of 2012 shocked the nation with a beastly and brutal gang rape on 23-years-old, physiotherapy student who boarded a bus to reach home in Delhi. A gang of six savage beasts raped her after injuring her brutally and her male companion in the moving bus. The girl Amanat aka Nirbhaya aka Damini (not the real name) succumbed to the injuries even after the government transported her in special ambulance to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. The six were arrested as nationwide protests were held, for the courts to issue death penalty to the accused, which is still pending.

However at this juncture should we restrict the women with various instructions or should we tighten our belts to strive for a rape-free society. Well what is the seed of a rape, on thorough introspection, emerges that eve-teasing is one of the worst seeds to this ghastly crime. At every street corner we find males standing and passing lewd comments on the passing women. Can security personnel be posted at each street corner, practically impossible. The best way would be to develop a conscience to keep such people at bay in the society.

To save another sister from the evil clutches of the dastardly men, all have to correct the way we look at Eves. They have got equal rights like all of us, they have their desires, dreams and targets. How can we demoralize them with rules and advices. Ultimately it is the males who are accused, instead of correcting them, we punish the victims with harsh rules, which is incorrect and injustice to the weaker class.

We need to check that another Nirbhaya, does not emerge in this billion nation, in future. The government on its side must tighten the rules and bring in necessary laws that should give more importance to women safety. Apart from these severe measures, government needs to impose prohibition. Doing this is not an easy task, as the government’s exchequer depends largely, on the taxes of this segment. But for good we need to do away with liquor.

Educational institutes must highlight the plight and the importance of women in creating a stronger nation, from giving birth to inculcating the best traits. Also anti ragging must be strictly adhered to, with out showing mercy on offenders irrespective of class community or creed.

On our side let us henceforth not advise our daughter or sister what to wear or where to go or how to behave and let us treat them at par with our son or brother. For a change let us educate our son or brother on how to respect womankind. Jai Hind. (Wishesh AarKay)
